How to Fix Blurry Photos: 5 Methods That Actually Work

Five honest ways to fix a blurry photo, from AI super-resolution to sharpening and better capture habits, plus how to tell which method suits your blur.

Not every blurry photo can be saved, and anyone who promises otherwise is selling something. But most blurry photos are blurry for a reason you can name — and once you can name it, there is usually a method that fits.

This guide walks through five of them. One is the AI route we built ImageEnhance around, and it is the one we reach for first. The other four are older, simpler, and still the right answer often enough that leaving them out would be dishonest.

First, work out what kind of blur you have

Reaching for a tool before you know the cause is how people end up with a crunchy, over-sharpened mess. Look at the photo at full size and see which of these it is.

Resolution blur. The photo is simply too small for where you want to use it. A thumbnail stretched to fill a product page, a screenshot pasted into a slide, an old phone picture opened on a large monitor. Zoom in and you see soft, mushy blocks rather than smeared streaks.

Compression mush. The photo has been saved, forwarded and re-saved until the fine texture is gone. Skin looks like plastic, flat areas of sky show faint square patterns, and text edges are ringed with grey fringing.

Motion or focus blur. Something moved — the camera, the subject, or the focus point. Streaks run in one consistent direction, or the background is crisp while your subject is not.

The first two categories are where modern tools genuinely help. The third is the hardest, and honesty matters more there than optimism.

Method 1: Rebuild the detail with AI super-resolution

This is the main event, so it gets the most space.

Traditional software can only rearrange the pixels you already have. AI super-resolution works differently: the model has seen an enormous number of sharp and soft image pairs, so when it looks at a soft edge it can make an informed prediction about what a sharp version of that edge should look like, then draw it. That is why the result gains detail instead of just gaining size.

How to do it

  1. Open ImageEnhance in any browser, on desktop or phone. There is nothing to install.

What it does well

  • Small images that need to be big. Upscaling to 4x the original resolution is the case AI handles best, because rebuilding detail is exactly what the model was trained for.
  • Lightly soft or compressed photos. Edges tighten, text becomes readable again, and the plastic look of an over-compressed portrait eases off.
  • Old scans and phone photos. Not a full restoration — see the honest limits below — but the jump in clarity is often the difference between a photo you hide and a photo you print.

Where it stops

AI cannot recover information that was never recorded. A photo that is completely out of focus, or so dark that there is nothing but noise underneath, has very little for the model to work from; you will get a cleaner version of a bad photo rather than a good one. Faces in heavy motion blur are the classic disappointment.

When you see a tool advertise a long row of separate AI buttons, it is worth asking how many of them are genuinely different models.

Method 2: Traditional sharpening, for a very narrow job

Unsharp mask and smart sharpen live in Photoshop, GIMP, Affinity, Lightroom and most phone editors. They increase contrast along edges that already exist. They do not add detail — they make existing detail more visible.

That narrow definition tells you exactly when to use them:

  • Good for: a photo that is technically in focus but looks a little soft; output sharpening before printing; a final touch after a resize.
  • Bad for: low resolution, compression damage, motion blur. In those cases sharpening amplifies the noise and the compression blocks along with everything else, and you get bright halos around every edge.

If you do sharpen, do it last, do it gently, and view at full size while you adjust. The moment you see white outlines appearing, you have gone too far.

Method 3: Stop the blur before it happens

This method fixes nothing you have already shot, which is why it goes in the middle rather than at the top. It is also the only method with zero quality loss, so it is worth the paragraph.

  • Give the camera more light. Almost all phone blur is a slow shutter compensating for a dark room. Open a curtain, turn on a lamp, move nearer a window.
  • Brace yourself, not just the phone. Elbows against your ribs, or the phone against a doorframe, beats holding your arms out.
  • Tap to focus, then wait. Phone cameras keep hunting until you tell them where to look, and the shot fires before they finish.
  • Wipe the lens. Pocket lint and fingerprints produce a soft, hazy blur that people routinely blame on the camera.
  • Take several, keep the sharpest. Burst mode costs nothing and one frame is usually noticeably sharper than the rest.

Method 4: Stop re-compressing the same file

Every time a JPG is saved, it is compressed again, and the damage accumulates. Send a photo through a messaging app, have someone save it and forward it, then download it from a social feed, and you are several generations of loss away from the original.

Practical habits that prevent it:

  • Export the original from your photo library rather than saving the copy someone sent you in a chat.
  • Keep an untouched master file and edit copies, never the master.
  • Archive anything you care about as PNG or WebP; both survive repeated saving far better than JPG.
  • Before you enhance anything, go looking for the original. AI works from what it is given, and a first-generation file produces a visibly better result than a much-forwarded one. This single step improves your outcome more than any setting you can change.

Method 5: Reshoot, or go back to the source

The unglamorous answer that is sometimes the correct one. Product shots, document scans, screenshots, receipts, listing photos — anything you can simply capture again — should be recaptured rather than repaired. Reshooting beats rescue work, and the result is genuinely sharp rather than convincingly reconstructed.

Go looking for the source file too. Design work usually has a layered original. A screenshot can be retaken at a larger window size. A scanned document can be rescanned at a higher setting. If the source exists, use it.

Which method fits which photo

  • Small photo, needs to be larger: AI super-resolution. Nothing else adds detail.
  • Forwarded and compressed to mush: find the original first; if it is gone, AI super-resolution.
  • In focus but slightly soft: gentle sharpening, or AI if you also need it bigger.
  • Motion or focus blur: manage your expectations, try AI since it is free to try, and plan to reshoot.
  • Something you can capture again: reshoot. Always.

Can AI really make a blurry photo sharp?

For soft, low-resolution and lightly blurred photos, yes, and the difference is often dramatic — edges tighten and details like eyes, hair and text come back. For photos that are completely out of focus or extremely dark, the improvement is modest, because there is less real information to work from. Why does my enhanced photo still look soft?

Usually one of three reasons. The original was more damaged than it looked at small size; you enhanced a heavily forwarded copy instead of the original file; or the blur is motion blur, which is the hardest kind to reconstruct. Try again with the largest, least-shared version of the file you can find — it is the fix that works most often.
